Done well, a glamping trip needs almost no planning once you arrive. These are the decisions that make the difference before you do.
The appeal of Khanabadosh Glamps is partly its simplicity once you’re there, arrive, settle, be somewhere extraordinary. But the trip doesn’t plan itself. A few decisions made poorly at the booking stage, wrong location, wrong timing, wrong accommodation format, can meaningfully affect what the experience delivers. This guide covers every step, in the right order.
Step 1: Choose your location: Murree or Kumrat
This is the most consequential decision and it depends primarily on how much time you have.
- Murree — Under two hours from Islamabad. Pine forest setting. Domes and wooden huts available. Ideal for a two-night weekend with limited travel time
- Kumrat — Nine to twelve hours from Islamabad through Dir. Open Mountain valley, river, snow-capped peaks. Full accommodation range: domes, pods, huts, single chalets, family chalets. Requires a longer trip to justify the journey, three nights minimum is advisable
If you have children or a group needing family chalets or single chalets, Kumrat is the only option, these formats are not available at Murree.
Step 2: Choose your accommodation format
- Couple or two friends at Murree — dome or wooden hut
- Couple or two friends at Kumrat — dome, pod, hut, or single chalet depending on preferred style
- Family with children — family chalet at Kumrat only
- Solo traveler — pod at Kumrat; dome or wooden hut at Murree
- Group of three or more — family chalet or multiple units at Kumrat
Step 3: Choose your dates strategically
Season
- April to early June — optimal for both locations: clear, green, comfortable, low visitor pressure
- July to August — busy at Murree particularly; Kumrat less congested but road conditions in Dir require checking after heavy rain
- September to October — excellent at both locations; post-monsoon clarity, autumn light, significantly quieter
- November to February — cold and striking; confirm heating and check road accessibility, especially for Kumrat
Day of week
Leave Islamabad Friday evening for a Murree trip, avoids Saturday morning peak traffic on the Murree road. For Kumrat, a Thursday departure is preferable to maximise time at the property given the drive length.
Moon phase
If outdoor stargazing from your deck is a priority, check the lunar calendar. New moon periods give the darkest skies. Full moon periods reduce star visibility significantly.
Step 4: Book with adequate lead time
- Peak summer weekends (July–August, Murree): a week or two in advance
- Kumrat peak season: three to four weeks; the longer journey self-limits demand somewhat
- Shoulder seasons: one to two weeks generally sufficient at both locations
- Last-minute: possible but risky for specific formats, domes and family chalets book out first
Step 5: Confirm what is included
- Meal arrangements — breakfast included? Dinner? Catering options?
- Heating confirmed — non-negotiable for autumn and winter bookings at both locations
- Private bathroom — standard at all Khanabadosh units; confirm applies to your specific booking
- Check-in and check-out times — plan the drive accordingly
- Cancellation policy — mountain weather can occasionally affect travel; know the terms
Step 6: Plan your drive
For Murree: Islamabad to Murree/Patriata via the Murree Expressway, well-maintained, approximately 60km. Fill fuel in Islamabad. Download offline maps before departure.
For Kumrat: Islamabad to Kumrat valley via Besham and Dir, approximately 350km, nine to twelve hours under good conditions. This is a full day’s drive. Plan an overnight stop if traveling with children or if departing in the afternoon. Carry cash, ATMs are limited past Besham. Download offline maps; signal drops significantly past Dir.
Should I go to Khanabadosh Murree or Kumrat?
Choose Murree for a quick weekend from Islamabad, under two hours, pine forest domes and huts, ideal for two nights. Choose Kumrat for a longer immersive trip, nine to twelve hours, open mountain valley, full accommodation range including pods, chalets, and family chalets. If you need family chalets or are traveling with a larger group, Kumrat is the only option.
How far in advance should I book a Khanabadosh glamping trip?
Peak summer weekends at Murree warrant two to three weeks advance booking. Kumrat and shoulder season dates generally require three to four weeks. Last-minute availability exists but is unreliable for specific formats, domes and family chalets fill first.
How long should I spend at Khanabadosh Kumrat?
Three nights minimum. The drive from Islamabad is nine to twelve hours each way; a two-night stay gives you only one full day at the property. Three nights allows two full days, enough to explore the valley, rest properly, and feel the trip was worth the journey.
